Born in La Roche-Guyon, François-Alexandre, duke de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt created a model farm on his estates where he tried to apply the agronomic methods that he had studied during a visit to England (1769). In the same period, he founded the École des enfants de la Patrie, later the École des arts et métiers de Châlons. A deputy for the nobility to the estates general (1789), during the revolution of 1789 he presented before the National Assembly his reports on the state of public hospitals and on poverty. He upheld individual freedoms and emigrated to England, then to the United States, after August 10, 1792. He returned to France in 1799 and was a deputy during the hundred days. A peer of France under the restoration and a member of the Council on Hospitals (1816), he was dismissed from his functions because of his liberal views. The duke de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt wrote L'État des pauvres en Angleterre (1800), Le Bonheur du peuple, almanach à l'usage de tout le monde (1819), and was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1821.
